JIPMER originated on 1 January 1823 as "Ecole de Médicine de Pondichéry," a medical school established by the French imperial government in India to train French citizens in Pondicherry. In 1956 the government of India took over administration of Pondicherry from the French and renamed it as "Dhanvantri Medical College."
In the 18th century the town of Pondichéry was laid out on a grid pattern and grew considerably.
French ambition clashed with the British interests in India.Dupleix's army successfully controlled the area between Hyderabad and Cape Comorin. But then Robert Clive arrived in India in 1744, a dare-devil British officer who dashed the hopes of Dupleix to create a French Colonial India.Dupleix was recalled to France in 1754.
In 1765 200 European and 2000 Tamil houses had been erected.During the next 50 years Pondichéry changed hands between France and Britain with the regularity of their wars and peace treaties.Successive governors improved infrastructure, industry, law and education over the next 138 years. An agreement between France and India in 1948 agreed to an election in France's remaining Indian possessions to choose their political future.
Now we get a doubt about the Foundations laid by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1956 on two reasons:
1.. Only After 1962 complete Freedom to Pondicherry is a message here.
2. Under the French, the college was located in the heart of the town of Pondicherry in the modified buildings of the high court, opposite Le place de Gaulle, which is now the Legislative Assembly Hall. In 1959, SE Le Comte Stanislas Ostrorog, Ambassadeur de France aux Indes, laid the foundation stone of the new medical college building that was located on the outskirts of the town and, in 1964, the college moved to its new campus at Gorimedu.
so after the Death of Jawaharlal Nehru on 27th May 1964 , it was again renamed to "Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research" (JIPMER) (on 13 July 1964). JIPMER originated on 1 January 1823 as "Ecole de Médicine de Pondichéry," a medical school established by the French imperial government in India to train French citizens in Pondicherry.
possibility of foundation by Nehru may be a wrong news.
JIPMER made autonomous, new Director takes over.
On October 15, 2008, former President A P J Abdul Kalam dedicated the Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) to the nation as an Institute of National Importance.
On December 7, 2011, Professor T S Ravikumar became the first Director of autonomous JIPMER.
so as an autonomous Institution It arrived its own planning in all matters including charging for treatments. Free services were stopped. Now This is a question of survival to Tamil people French citizens at Pondicherry.
.
